F or the decade that is past tv, the laugh happens to be on millennials. Or, more particularly, Shameless Millennials: the self-obsessed and clueless grifters of Girls and Bondi Hipsters and Re Search Party; privileged inner-city twenty- and thirtysomethings whom feel eligible to much more than they have.
ABC’s new comedy series Why Are You Like This continues that trope in many ways. It’s a show around three buddies inside their very very very early 20s “barely coping with their independence that is growing with cash, and dreams that seem unachievable”.
However these Shameless Millennials aren’t millennials at all – anybody in their very very early 20s is currently squarely Gen Z. And like the majority of more youthful individuals, whom frequently see millennials as embarrassing and over-earnest, they will have an even more complex relationship with pity.
“This is considered the most thing that is humiliating done in my own life,” claims Humyara Mahbub, among the show’s three creators.
